Volkswagen New Beetle
The Volkswagen New Beetle is hardly new at this point, but it is still as novel as ever. It is a car with a definitive personality, and it as become somewhat of a cult favorite. The Beetle comes in a variety of hip, peppy colors and has an interior to match. It is a safe car that is also fun to drive with its great handling and tight feel. Available in either a coupe or the more fun convertible, and in gas or diesel, the New Beetle offers options for anyone's tastes.
The standard engine in the GL and GLS models is a 2.0-liter with 115 horsepower. The GLS 1.8T has a turbocharged four-cylinder with 150 horsepower. All models come standard with a five-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed automatic Tiptronic for 2005. With a rating of 46 mpg highway, the New Beetle is as practical as is it fun. Plus, the New Beetle comes with a load of features such as air conditioning, pollen filter, six speaker AM/FM cassette stereo, standard MP3 player input (for 2005 models) and a 3-month trial of either XM or Sirius satellite radio service, keyless remote, anti-theft system, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, tilt and telescoping steering column, halogen headlights with daytime running lights, heated mirrors, cruise control, power windows, all-season tires, 16-inch steel wheels, and a full-size spare. The convertible's top is triple-layered cloth for extra insulation and comes in either automatic or manual.
For safety, the New Beetle has driver and front passenger airbags dual-stage frontal airbags, side airbags mounted in the seatbacks, and LATCH backseat tether for securing a child safety seat. It also provides several measures to ensure safety in the event of a rollover.
The construction of the Beetle is solid with tight door and fender joints, and the exterior panels are strong, dent-resistant plastic. On the inside, the Beetle is surprisingly roomy. It is bigger than its equally novel competitors, the Mini Cooper and the PT Cruiser. It also rides more smoothly, handles better, and is more responsive (depending on the engine type).
The interior is very attractive, with trendy-looking blue and red lighting of the electronics, but this sacrifices some user-friendliness. It is quiet inside at high speeds, even in the convertible model. OnStar is a nice addition to the Beetle, which acts as a navigation system and will also call for help in emergency. It eliminates the need for locksmiths if you lock your keys inside, and will find your vehicle if it's stolen. While this comes at a subscription price, it is well worth it. They can even help you find restaurants, gas stations, or hotels and make reservations for you.
The New Beetle is aimed toward enthusiasts as a revival of its cultish predecessor, and while it is guaranteed to satisfy this demographic, it will make believers out of many more due to its loveable appearance and more-than-capable performance quality.
