Saturn

Like every other American family, Saturn is constantly looking toward the future. Trying to figure out what's the next and making sure they're prepared for it. But every once in a while, it's nice to get out the old family album and look back on all the good times there have been along the way.

In January 7th 1985, the birth of a new kind of Company called Saturn Corporation is founded with a singular focus on the people. A unique relationship between Saturn and the United Auto Workers created a revolutionary agreement. Going beyond plans for a simple snow switch, an engineer and his team began work on a traction control system (later patented) for all Saturn automatics with anti-locking brakes.

The first Saturn sedan, a medium sedan comes off the assembly line in Spring Hill in 1990. In 1991 the best car in its class is a Saturn Coupe. In 1992 Saturn ranked number one in new car sales per retailer -- the first time in fifteen years that a domestic nameplate tops the list. A sporty new wagon joins the Saturn family. The SW2 makes it's the first appearance at the Los Angeles auto show in 1992. In 1992, the sixth annual Black Engineer Awards Conference in Baltimore honors their chief engineer of body systems and components for outstanding technical contributions. Still in 1992, the 100,000th Saturn car rolls off the line in Spring Hill. In June, the same year, the first Saturn cars go on sale in Taiwan. By August the same year, there were 200,000 Saturn cars on the roads and counting. In 1993, Consumers Digest magazine names the Saturn sedan and wagon among the "Best Buys in Compact Class." Saturn's affordable and innovative Traction Control System earns them the 1993 "Technology of the Year" award from Automobile magazine.

Saturn is changing things to come, like putting a positive spin on the much-feared term "used-car salesman" by applying their patented upfront and honest approach to selling used cars. For the second consecutive year, Saturn is ranked number one for overall in J.D. Power and Associates Sales Satisfaction Index Study. January 1996 Saturn begins sales of the GM EV1 electric vehicle -- that's progression toward a non-polluted atmosphere. Here's reminder about Saturn sedans, its ranked number one in the small-car category according to a "Vehicle Experience Survey" this year of 1996.
