SAAB 9-3

The Saab 9-3, with a strong v6 engine earns its place in the upper ranks of its class. It is sporty and fun to drive. Two new turbocharged models add more horsepower than before. In addition, Saab has revamped all of its models and lowered the prices significantly, making the 9-3 a much more attractive car for all buyers. Saab origins as a Swedish aircraft design company are evident in its designs, model names, and even its logo. Stepping into a Saab, one is instantly reminded of an airplane cockpit. Other more practical features, like angled mirrors that eliminate blind spots and larger windshields for more visibility come from this heritage as well.

The 9-3 comes in a four-door sedan, two-door coupe, or the SportCombi four-door wagon. The 2.0T versions are less expensive than the Aero editions, but they are still nicely equipped with turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines with 5-speed manual transmissions standard that give 210 horsepower. Six-speed automatic transmission is available for an extra $1,350. They also come with leather and wood interiors, dual-zone auto temperature controls, power windows, locks, and driver's seat, 16-inch alloy wheels, an audio system consisting of seven speakers and CD player with MP3 player input, two 12-volt power outlets, and free maintenance and roadside assistance for as long as the warranty lasts.

The Aero editions are all about $6,000 more, and come standard with six-speed manual transmissions with shifter buttons on the steering wheel, xenon headlights, fog lights, premium sound system, and a moon roof, in addition to an extra 40 horses under the hood. And for just under $2K, a DVD navigation system can be added to any model.

All of Saabs cars come with a variety of safety features, and the 9-3 is no exception. Electronic stability control, cornering brake control, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, and traction control are all very nice features that help keep drivers in control of their vehicles in emergency situations. Drivers effectively surrounded by airbags, and the head restraints are designed to prevent whiplash in the event of a rear-end collision. All of these come standard.

The 9-3 is not quite considered a luxury car, but it still competes with comparable models from BMW, Mercedes, and Audi. This being said, the 9-3 is distinctly Saab-like in design. The shape of the body, and the angles of the windshield and headlights are instantly recognizable to Saab enthusiasts. Other parts of the car though have been purposely changed and give the car a much hipper and more modern look. The interior is also unmistakably Saab-like in design, but this does not sacrifice anything in comfort or ease of use. The instrument panels are easy-to read, and the location of the ignition (on the console between the driver a passenger seats) will please some and annoy others. Overall the Saab 9-3 is a very satisfying car with enough great features to please anyone, Saab-lover or not.
