General Motors
Founded in 1908, General Motors has the boasting rights of being the oldest car manufacturer in the world. Having grown to global status, the Michigan-based General Motors has grown to include such well-known brands as Saab, Pontiac, Saturn, Oldsmobile, Hummer, Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac. Although the company has holdings in the global market, their largest customer base is in the United States. After surpassing the success of their major competitors, the Ford Motor company, General Motors has gone on to expand their interest in a number of other areas, such as finance and has set several records for being the first American company to bring in over $1 billion dollars annually.
Working with hybrid technologies in recent years General Motors was one of the leaders in creating a line of Flex Fuel vehicles that can run on either conventional petroleum-based gasoline or ethanol biofuels. In the late 1990s, General Motors released their EV1, an electric car that was the first of its kind to be mass produced, however the idea of this model never reached the heights of popularity the company had hoped for and all vehicles were eventually recalled and the technology program that released the car was cancelled. This caused a significant uproar across the United States from special interest groups who had hoped to throw their weight behind a car that was to be the leader for a new wave of environmentally-friendly car. General Motors was criticized heavily for this move; however they have since focused on other technologies, such as hydrogen-based fuel cars. However, despite that setback, General Motors has continued to work with hybrid technologies, even releasing the first hybrid pick up truck in the world.
One of the most popular and lucrative technologies to come out of General Motors in recent years is their OnStar system which provides information services, security and safety for its drivers.
Cars manufactured by General Motors are generally considered to be a good buy - meaning that the value of the car is proportional to the price you will pay for it. One of the best deals that can be found is in the Saturn division. Saturn emerged from General Motors when the company was on a downward swing and virtually turned the company around with a line of cars that were high on quality and value, low on price. The Saturn series is still growing and has proven to have the kind of longevity and strength not often seen in a brand new line of cars. Currently, the Saturn Vue ® Green Line, the newest release of hybrid vehicles from the company, is being praised as the most affordable hybrid SUV available on the market to date. This is in addition to the many other efforts the company is making to support environmental causes and protection through hybrid technologies.
General Motors has shown tremendous growth as a company, expanding all across the world and continuing to dominate other companies with similar products in almost every country. One big draw for customers is that the company is an American one, which has kept many customers loyal for generations.
