BMW

The German car manufacturer, BMW, which stands for Bavarian Motor Works, is known world-wide for its excellence in quality, consistency, technology and luxury. BMWs are typically considered to be a sign of prestige and class among the national car consumer. These high end cars feature a wide range of options and are among the world's top competitors in innovation, trend setting and style. Although BMW didn't start manufacturing cars in the US until the mid-1990s, that didn't stop American drivers from purchasing the cars en masse well before that time.

BMW came to the United States in 1975. Originally seated as importers of high performance and luxury cars, the company soon began to import and distribute motorcycles and eventually, trucks; however, cars are considered to be their true specialty. Self-titled "The Ultimate Driving Machine™," the BMW car series website, boasts, "At BMW, performance is not a buzzword. It is our passion and endless pursuit. Every technology found throughout a BMW, from engine to driver's controls, is seamlessly integrated to push the overall performance of the vehicle to limits demanded on the German autobahn freeways. And greatly appreciated by American drivers who share our passion for performance." It is the high standards of performance of a BMW that draws customer back to the company year after year.

Performance is definitely one of the biggest draws for both new customers and returning customers alike. The BMW car series is considered to be in competition with such high-end cars as the Porsche, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz. The current vision the company has for its line of cars is to make the design match up with the standards for performance. BMW has experienced some controversy in the past of the recent changes in the overall design of the car, which has strayed from the appearance of the older, more traditionally recognized models, however, sales continue to increase, proving that BMW not only has a loyal customer base, but continues to attract new clientele each year.

The BMW M-series, a hugely popular line of motor sport cars became so fashionable and admired by enthusiasts that the company eventually had to split the series into its own company. The M-series is known for not only the high-end performance standards BMW is known for, but also for the practicality that reflects the tradition of the entire line of BMW cars.

One of the biggest drawbacks of purchasing a BMW is the expense. Some of the models will run for well over $100,000, although it is possible to find a new BMW for as little as around $30,000. Most BMW owners don't balk at the price, however, because they are paying not only for the status of owning one of the most famously prestigious cars in the world, but also for the performance the BMW cars are known for. The expense won't stop at the purchase price, however. In 2006, the BMW 760Li and the M5 were ranked #3 and #7 respectively, on the Forbes' Auto list of the top ten most expensive cars to insure.
